Barack Obama was raised by a single mother and his grandparents. They didn't have much money, but they taught him values from the Kansas heartland where they grew up. He took out loans to put himself through school. After college, he worked for Christian churches in Chicago, helping communities devastated when steel plants closed. Obama turned down lucrative job offers after law school to return to Chicago, leading a successful voter registration drive. He joined a small law firm, taught constitutional law and, guided by his Christian faith, stayed active in his community. Obama and his wife Michelle are proud parents of two daughters, Sasha and Malia.
Early YearsBarack Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4th, 1961. His father, Barack Obama Sr., was born and raised in a small village in Kenya, where he grew up herding goats with his own father, who was a domestic servant to the British. Barack's mother, Ann Dunham, grew up in small-town Kansas. Her father worked on oil rigs during the Depression, and then signed up for World War II after Pearl Harbor, where he marched across Europe in Patton's army. Her mother went to work on a bomber assembly line, and after the war, they studied on the G.I. Bill, bought a house through the Federal Housing Program, and moved west to Hawaii. It was there, at the University of Hawaii, where Barack's parents met. His mother was a student there, and his father had won a scholarship that allowed him to leave Kenya and pursue his dreams in America. Barack's father eventually returned to Kenya, and Barack grew up with his mother in Hawaii, and for a few years in Indonesia. Later, he moved to New York, where he graduated from Columbia University in 1983.
The College YearsRemembering the values of empathy and service that his mother taught him, Barack put law school and corporate life on hold after college and moved to Chicago in 1985, where he became a community organizer with a church-based group seeking to improve living conditions in poor neighborhoods plagued with crime and high unemployment. The group had some success, but Barack had come to realize that in order to truly improve the lives of people in that community and other communities, it would take not just a change at the local level, but a change in our laws and in our politics. He went on to earn his law degree from Harvard in 1991, where he became the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. Soon after, he returned to Chicago to practice as a civil rights lawyer and teach constitutional law. Finally, his advocacy work led him to run for the Illinois State Senate, where he served for eight years. In 2004, he became the third African American since Reconstruction to be elected to the U.S. Senate.
Political CareerIt has been the rich and varied experiences of Barack Obama's life - growing up in different places with people who had differing ideas - that have animated his political journey. Amid the partisanship and bickering of today's public debate, he still believes in the ability to unite people around a politics of purpose - a politics that puts solving the challenges of everyday Americans ahead of partisan calculation and political gain. In the Illinois State Senate, this meant working with both Democrats and Republicans to help working families get ahead by creating programs like the state Earned Income Tax Credit, which in three years provided over $100 million in tax cuts to families across the state. He also pushed through an expansion of early childhood education, and after a number of inmates on death row were found innocent, Senator Obama worked with law enforcement officials to require the videotaping of interrogations and confessions in all capital cases. In the U.S. Senate, he has focused on tackling the challenges of a globalized, 21st century world with fresh thinking and a politics that no longer settles for the lowest common denominator. His first law was passed with Republican Tom Coburn, a measure to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how and where every dime of their tax dollars is spent. He has also been the lead voice in championing ethics reform that would root out Jack Abramoff-style corruption in Congress. As a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Senator Obama has fought to help Illinois veterans get the disability pay they were promised, while working to prepare the VA for the return of the thousands of veterans who will need care after Iraq and Afghanistan. Recognizing the terrorist threat posed by weapons of mass destruction, he traveled to Russia with Republican Dick Lugar to begin a new generation of non-proliferation efforts designed to find and secure deadly weapons around the world. And knowing the threat we face to our economy and our security from America's addiction to oil, he's working to bring auto companies, unions, farmers, businesses and politicians of both parties together to promote the greater use of alternative fuels and higher fuel standards in our cars. Whether it's the poverty exposed by Katrina, the genocide in Darfur, or the role of faith in our politics, Barack Obama continues to speak out on the issues that will define America in the 21st century. But above all his accomplishments and experiences, he is most proud and grateful for his family. His wife, Michelle, and his two daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, live on Chicago's South Side.
Urgent Action On International Coral Reef Crisis Urged — Coral reef scientists and policy makers from the world’s most prominent coral reef nations are meeting in Australia this week to develop urgent action plans to rescue the world’s richest centre of marine biodiversity from gradual decline. Human pressures on the Coral Triangle have raised grave concerns about the future of its fish, corals and other sea life, leading to a proposal by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for joint action by six governments, scientists, agencies and environmental non-government organisations of the region. Marine scientists from the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (CoECRS) at James Cook University and the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) are assisting the largest reef conservation program ever undertaken, known as the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security. The Coral Triangle (CT) spans Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and the Solomon Islands, and has over 200 million inhabitants, a third of whom depend on the sea for food security or livelihood. Spread over 5.7 million square kilometres, the CT has the highest diversity of marine life of any area on Earth. It contains three quarters of the world’s known coral species, a third of the world’s coral reefs, more than 3,000 species of fish and the world’s richest mangrove forests. It generates $2.3 billion in sea products each year and is a major spawning ground for tuna and other valuable species. These resources are under threat from a combination of over-fishing (including illegal fishing), coral bleaching and ocean acidification, pollution and sedimentation due to coastal development. "Everyone recognises that coral reefs, and the economic and social benefits they generate, are at risk,” CoECRS Director Professor Terry Hughes said. “Fish, corals and climate change don’t respect national boundaries – so the need for region-wide action is paramount. “This is a critical initiative by many countries, acting together for the first time, to sustain the livelihoods of millions of people,” he said. "In developing countries, millions of local people suffer real hardship when reefs and ocean habitats are degraded. There is a social and economic imperative to protect them." According to AIMS Acting Research Director Frank Tirendi, “Better collaboration between Coral Triangle experts and Australian experts may well be a fundamental requirement to ensure the knowledge base is in place to prevent an environmental crisis to our north and ensure longer term regional fisheries and food security”. The CTI is a partnership between the six Coral Triangle countries, other governments, aid agencies, donors, WWF, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Conservation International (CI). The CTI has a current global commitment projected to be at least $US500 million and its plan of action includes: Developing an ecosystem approach to fisheries management across the Coral Triangle Building a network of Marine Protected Areas across the region Measures to help adaptation to climate change Measures to help protect threatened marine species. From 10 to 14 November the ARC Centre of Excellence and AIMS will help present an international forum on Management and Conservation of the Coral Triangle in Townsville, hosted by Australia’s Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts.
Octopus Family Tree Traced Using New Molecular Evidence — Octopuses started migrating to new ocean basins more than 30 million years ago as Antarctica cooled and large ice-sheets grew. These huge climatic events created a 'thermohaline expressway' - a northbound flow of deep cold water, providing new habitat for the animals previously confined to the sea floor around Antarctica, according to new research led by Dr Louise Allcock at Queen's School of Biological Sciences and colleagues from Cambridge University and British Antarctic Survey. Isolated in new habitat conditions, many different species evolved. Some octopuses lost their defensive ink sacs because there was no need for the defence mechanisms in the pitch black waters more than two kilometres below the surface. Dr Allcock, who was assisted on the study by Dr Jan Strugnell and Dr Paulo Prodöhl from Queen's, said: "It is clear from our research that climate change can have profound effects on biodiversity, with impacts even extending into habitats such as the deep oceans which you might expect would be partially protected from it. "If octopuses radiated in this way, it's likely that other fauna did so also, so we have helped explain where some of the deep-sea biodiversity comes from." This revelation into the global distribution and diversity of deep-sea fauna, to be reported this week in the respected scientific journal Cladistics, was made possible by intensive sampling during International Polar Year expeditions. The findings form part of the first Census of Marine Life (CoML), set to be completed in late 2010. It aims to assess and explain the diversity, distribution and abundance of marine life in the oceans, past, present and future. The project, which began in 2000, involves more than 2,000 scientists from 82 nations. The findings of a study funded by the National Environment Research Council and will be reported at a conference in Spain. The World Conference on Marine Biodiversity is taking place in Valencia between 11 and 15 November.
New Species Discovered That Look Like Alien! I did not make this. I just think it is cool.
Story [edit] Plot In Tomb Raider, Lara Croft hunts for pieces of a talisman called the Scion, the first of which is found in the Tomb of Qualopec, Peru. The story opens with a prologue in Los Alamos County, New Mexico. A nuclear test causes an earthquake which exposes an ancient device buried beneath the desert. The device is set into motion and reveals a frozen lifeform. The story then continues in the present day. After Lara Croft returns from an expedition in the Himalayas she is contacted by an American named Larson, who works for the wealthy businesswoman Jacqueline Natla, owner of Natla Technologies. At Natla's request, Lara sets out on an expedition to recover a mysterious artefact called the Scion from the lost tomb of Qualopec, in the mountains of Peru. However after successfully retrieving the object, she is nearly robbed of it when Larson attempts to kill her outside the tomb. Wasting no time, Lara sets out to discover why Natla double-crossed her, and breaks into her office to find out more about the truth behind the artefact, of which there appears to be more than one piece. She discovers a medieval manuscript which reveals the whereabouts of a second piece of the Scion, which is buried beneath an ancient monastery of St. Francis in Greece. It appears Natla has sent Pierre Dupont, a rival French archaeologist, to recover the fragment from the site. Hot on each others trail, Lara and Pierre race each other through the catacombs of the monastery to get to the second Scion first. The battle comes to a head at the tomb of Tihocan, where Lara recovers the second Scion and finally kills Pierre Dupont. An inscription inside the tomb reveals that Tihocan was one of three joint rulers of Atlantis. At some point a calamity struck which sunk the continent into the ocean and scattered their culture over the world. Qualopec continued to rule in South America, Tihocan in Greece, and it appears a third ruler thrived in Egypt. Miss Jacqueline Natla, the game's primary antagonist.Lara travels to the Valley of the Kings where she quickly discovers the third Scion, and is faced with Larson one last time. Upon leaving the tomb however, she is awaited by Natla and her henchmen, who steal the three artefacts from her and nearly kill her. Lara escapes and follows their trail to a remote island, where mining operations of Natla Technologies have partially exposed the Great Pyramid of Atlantis. After making her way through the mines dispatching Natla's goons, Lara reaches the heart of the pyramid chamber, where the three Scions are fused together as a source of power. In a flashback, it is revealed that Natla was the third ruler of Atlantis, and that she betrayed her co-rulers by abusing the power of the Scion amulet for genetic experimentation. As punishment, she was locked into a stasis cell by Qualopec and Tihocan, and buried beneath the ground. The power released by the pyramid and the Scion caused a major cataclysm destroying the once powerful and advanced civilisation. As a result (similar to Easter Island) the survivors lost all their knowledge and power, and had to slowly rebuild from the ground up. Centuries later Natla awoke when the cell was exposed by an earthquake. With her cunning and knowledge she quickly became incredibly rich and powerful around the world. Having regained the power of the artefacts, Natla attempts to restore her former power with an army of genetic mutants. However, Lara manages to destroy the Scion and defeats Natla. The pyramid is destroyed along with the mutants, and the remains of the Atlantean civilisation. [edit] LocationsBefore commencing the actual game, players may choose to complete a training course set in Lara's home. This tutorial is designed to get the player acquainted with the basics of the game and includes jumping and climbing techniques on ten vaulting boxes. The story mode begins with an introductory sequence, after which the player is taken to the first level in Peru. Throughout the game, Lara travels across the globe in search for the three artefact parts and the final battle with Natla, in four different locales: Peru (4 levels): The game begins in the mountains of Peru, where the player discovers the entrance to the long lost city of Vilcabamba. Deep within the mountains near Vilcabamba, she finds the ancient tomb of Qualopec. The action takes place in valleys and tombs around an Incan city. Greece (5 levels): The levels in Greece are set inside the medieval monastery of St. Francis, which was built upon the side of a mountain that conceals layer upon layer of civilization, harking back to the Golden age of Greece and Rome. Egypt (3 levels): In Egypt, in a hidden canyon near the Valley of the Kings, Lara explores buried pyramids and a sphinx in a place called the Sanctuary of the Scion. Atlantis (3 levels): The final part takes place on a remote island in an unspecified location, where mining operations of Natla Technologies have partially exposed the great pyramid of Atlantis. This is where the mystery unfolds. [edit] Gameplay [edit] Overview Lara in her attack stance, with pistols drawn. St. Francis' Folly, Greece. In Tomb Raider, the player controls the female archaeologist Lara Croft, in search for the three mysterious Scion artefacts across the world. The game is presented in third person perspective. Lara is always visible and the camera follows the action from behind or over her shoulder. The world she inhabits is fully drawn in three dimensions and characterized by its cubic nature. Ledges, walls and ceilings sit at 90 degrees to each other, although the game designers sometimes obscure this to make it less obvious. The object of Tomb Raider is to guide Lara through a series of tombs and other locations in search of treasures and artefacts. On the way, she must kill dangerous animals and other creatures, while collecting objects and solving puzzles to gain access to an ultimate prize, usually a powerful artefact. Gunplay is restricted to the killing of various animals that appear throughout each stage, although occasionally Lara may be faced with a human opponent. Instead the emphasis lies on solving puzzles and performing trick jumps to complete each level. As such, Tomb Raider in essence harkens back to the classical form of platform style gameplay.[2][3]
[edit] Features City of Vilcabamba, Peru.Movement in the game is varied and allows for complex interactions with the environment. Besides walking, running, and jumping, Lara can perform side-steps, hang on ledges, roll over, dive, and swim through water. In a free environment, Lara has two basic stances: one with weapons drawn and one with her hands free. By default she carries two pistols with infinite ammo. Additional weapons include the shotgun, dual magnums and dual Uzis. At a certain point in the story, Lara will be stripped of all her weapons, leaving the player defenceless and forced to recover her pistols, a development which later became a staple of the series. Numerous enemies as well as a variety of lethal traps can bring about Lara's death in Tomb Raider, the most important threat of which is falling to death. As the game adopts a platform style approach of progress, well timed jumps must often bring Lara safely to the other side of a ledge or she will plummet to the ground below. Other means by which the game will prematurely end include death by burning, drowning, electrocution, becoming impaled on spikes, being shot, being crushed, lethal damage from animals, human enemies, or creatures and even been turned into gold. Key items found throughout the game.A general action button is used to perform a wide range of movements in Tomb Raider, such as picking up items, pulling switches, firing guns, pushing or pulling blocks, and grabbing onto ledges. Regular items to pick up include ammo, and small and large medipacks. Game-specific items are keys and artefacts required to complete a stage. Any item that is collected is held onto in Lara's inventory until it is used. The puzzles that the player encounters across each level vary: pulling specific combinations of levers, a course of timed jumps, avoiding a certain trap or collecting several keystones. Throughout each stage, one or more secrets may be located. Discovering these secrets is optional, and when the player has found one a tune plays. The locations of these secrets vary in difficulty to reach. Some are hidden along the roadside in bushes, others require the completion of a hidden course or optional puzzle to be found. The player is usually rewarded with extra items. In the PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions of Tomb Raider, saving the game is restricted to fixed save points within each level, marked by a floating blue crystal. When Lara touches one of these the option to save is made available. The scarcity of these points, however, means that if the player dies, large portions of each level must be replayed, much to the players' frustration. Following criticism on this system, Core implemented a save anywhere at any time feature in Tomb Raider II.[4] The DOS and Mac versions of the game allow the player to save at any time. A stage is finished when a certain doorway is reached, an artefact is recovered, or a boss is destroyed.

redibly varied and imaginative levels Excellent musical score and narration Immense customisation and creativity potential High replayability factor. The BadShort story mode Camera struggles in multiplayer Building a compelling level can be time-consuming. Although Little Big Planet could be described as a platforming game, its dedication to creativity in every area takes it far beyond the confines of the genre. Everything from your character to the environment is geared towards user creation and adaptation, via stickers and costumes right up to a full-blown level creator. Each level of the story mode is an unforgettable trip through the wild imagination of the designers, and it would be difficult to find a game that's as much fun to play with friends co-operatively. It's a little disheartening that the Story mode is over so quickly, and although there's some longevity to be had from finding all the hidden extras, you can still see everything the story has to offer in six hours. Then there's the level creator--an astoundingly powerful toolset that theoretically allows you to recreate anything you see in the included levels and much more. However, it still requires a great deal of time and skill to develop something that people will actually want to play, and despite the best intentions of the developer, it's a feature that not everyone will be able to take full advantage of. The overall result is a game that's incredibly fun while it lasts, and one that has the potential to be taken further by its community. This is the pod, your window on the world of Little Big Planet. Like everything else in the game, it's customisable. The titular Little Big Planet is the place where all human imagination collects--the planet above the cosmos where our untapped creativity escapes when we're asleep or daydreaming. That's the background, anyway, and though characters occasionally refer to each other in the game, this fantastical journey has little in the way of exposition or backstory. There are eight themed worlds in total, and they vary in style from places such as the African savannah to the Mexican desert and ninja-obsessed Japan. Each world has either three or four individual levels, most of which can be completed in less than 10 minutes, and each level also has a bonus challenge or race if you can find the key hidden within. These bonus levels offer some of the most fun and imaginative experiences in the game, with an homage to Line Rider, skipping contests, and even drag racing competitions. Little Big Planet's emphasis on creativity is completely embodied by its mascot, Sackboy. This endearingly cute rag doll acts as a blank slate for your creativity, and as you collect new materials and clothing in the story mode, you can constantly try out new looks. You can dress him up in costumes, add accessories such as hats and glasses, and even change his covering from that familiar brown to a particularly gaudy pink. Sackboy is also highly expressive, and you can use the controller's triggers and analog stick to move his arms and even smack unruly players. The D pad controls his facial expressions: up for happy, down for sad, left for scared, and right for angry, and repeatedly tapping in that direction further emphasises these emotions. You can also use the motion sensor to move Sackboy's head and hips, nodding knowingly if you win a level, at least until someone inevitably smacks you in the face for being so smug. With so much control over your character, you often end up spending a good deal of time just changing clothes, pulling faces, and maybe even sticking a "LOLZ" sticker on your buddy's forehead

Japanese animatronics company Kokoro updated its Actroid female robot. I first did not get why the Actroid wears a Hello Kitty T-Shirt, until I saw that Kokoro now belongs to the Sanrio Group, who is responsible for the Hello Kitty stuff polluting the world. If you compare the face of the orginal Actroid from 2003 with the current one, you can see that she got much more attractive looking. She looks younger and happier too. The new Actroid version DER2 can apparently deliver more facial expressions. The female robot can still not walk around, but besides that she looks, speaks and behaves very life-like. Apparently you can rent her for 400,000 yen (US$3,500) for 5 days. More details and videos on NewLaunches. See also the Kokoro Dreams site. In 2005 the Actroid actually was renamed to Repliee Q1, seems we are back to Actroid. Also worth looking again at is the Actroid in a Booth Babe out-fit.
An exoskeleton that can be worn by a human is a new type of robot under development at Tsukuba University. It's called Hybrid Assistive Limb, HAL for short, and anyone who wears it has potential to lift up to 10-times the weight they normally could. “It depends on his original power, because this robot suit is controlled by the assist ratio,” says Yoshiyuki Sankai of Tsukuba University. “Usually we set it at 50% or 60% or 70%. If he is a very weak person we set the assist ratio at 90%, so at that time you say 10 times.” HAL works by figuring out what the wearer's muscle are doing. The suit then simply reacts. “The command signals from the brain are transmitted to the muscles through the motor neurons, and we can detect such faint bio-electrical signals on the surface of the skin, and these signals are calibrated into the computer here, and after that this computer controls these power units so he can move or upgrade his power,” says Sankai.

August 2005 is an important date in many consumers’ lives; it was the date when the first walkman phones went on sale. Since then over 45 million walkman phones have been shipped.
The walkman phone is a phone which combines more storage, better battery life and different accessories. However, Sony Ericsson have now realised that the consumer expects more; more music, more ways of playing the music and more ways to share music. With this in mind, they launched two new walkman phones. The Sony W380 is the successor to the W300 and comes in a clamshell design. Aimed at the youth market, it comes complete with many unique and original features such as gesture control, which mutes calls or silences the alarm with a wave of your hand. It also has the walkman controls on top of the phone, so that you can easily manage your music. The slogan for this handset is ‘ hear, see and feel music’ which is accurate, as the handset comes with a media manager, that means you can easily share and transfer music, photos and videos between your computer and phone. The W380 comes with TrackID, PlayNow, FM Radio, 512MB memory stick, Bluetooth, MegaBass, 1.3MP Camera with 4x digital zoom, RSS reader, Web, GSM, GPRS, EDGE and comes in Electric Purple, Magnetic Grey and Champagne Black.
Sony Ericsson also launched their first USB Mobile Broadband Modem. It has quad band EDGE and tri band HSDPA. It can operate on Mac-OS X and Windows 2000, XP and Vista. It also has a 128MB internal memory for storing files on it. It has Sony Ericsson wireless manager on it and comes with auto-installation and auto-configuration making it quick and easy to get up and running.
by Admin Last night I had the privilege of being invited to the launch of the newest Sony Ericsson products, due to be released within the first few months of 2008. These products most definitely fit in with Sony Ericssons favourite words; discovery, innovation, enrich and enable and certainly go a long way to contributing to their aspiration of being in the top 3 manufacturers list. Sony Ericsson are very focused on the web, and how the web has changed the way in which we work and play. The web has now become a way of life to many consumers, and with this in mind they are launching new web based phone and a new PC communications device. The K660i Aimed at the youth market, the Sony Ericsson K660i is designed for using the web, with HSDPA. It also comes with four 1-touch illuminated shortcuts for web browsing. You can view the web in landscape or portrait and the central navigation key becomes they mouse when in web mode. Sony have also for the first time on a generic Sony Ericsson handset enabled Google maps. It comes in two colours, Lime on White and Wine on Black. It comes enabled with instant messaging, RSS feed reader and desktop, Email Client, 2MP camera with 4x digital zoom, Bluetooth, and a music player complete with FM Radio, TrackID, PlayNow and MegaBass.
Marine biologists have discovered a crustacean in the South Pacific that resembles a hairy lobster. The team found the animal last year in waters 2,300m (7,540ft) deep at a site 1,500km (900 miles) south of Easter Island, an expert has claimed. Its name was inspired by “Kiwa”, the goddess of shellfish in native Polynesian culture and “hirsute” which means hairy. The blind creature has pincers covered in hairy strands and has “the vestige of a membrane” instead of eyes, Segonzac told the Associated Press.
This recent discovery was made in the Khandadhar region, eastern India. Sushil Kumar Dutta, leader of a team of researchers from NGO Vasundhra, found the 7-inch long creature in the forest, 625 miles southeast of New Delhi. Legless lizards are a large family of snake-like lizards, compared to the solid-toothed, harmless snakes. Preliminary scientific study reveals that the lizard belongs to the genus Sepsophis.
This animal was discovered in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica, scientists even suggesting that life on Earth started here. This new species was even listed on eBay, for auction. A recent study showed that these tiny invertebrates cal live to be 100 years old, and some may reach 200 years, making them one of the oldest animals on Earth.
The fascinating marine biodiversity of the Bird’s Head Seascape on the northwestern end of Indonesia’s Papua province is home to 50 new marine species, including the new epaulette shark (Hemiscyillum freycineti). In addition to the two types of walking epaulette sharks, the researchers discovered 22 species of other fish, 20 species of hard corals, and 8 kinds of shrimp all believed new to science. However, the underwater world is under severe threat from over-fishing with dynamite and cyanide, as well as deforestation and mining that degrade coastal waters.
Tree Kangaroos The golden-mantled tree kangaroo was discovered in December 2005 by a team of Indonesian, Australian, and U.S. scientists, in the Foya Mountains, in the Papua proivince. Currently, ten species are recognized in the group, nearly all of which are threatened by habitat loss or hunting. The golden-mantled tree kangaroo is considered as one of the most endangered of all tree-kangaroos, being extinct in most of its original range.
Granrojo
Marine biologists at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute discovered 23 of what they call Big Reds in Monterey Bay and the Sea of Cortez and off Hawaii, Japan and the Farallon Islands near San Francisco. Granrojo or big red, Tiburonia granrojo, is a recently discovered jellyfish of the family Ulmaridae, the only member of its genus yet identified. Scientists named the new genus “Tiburonia” after the aquarium’s research vessel Tiburon, and the species “granrojo,” Spanish for big red.

Curious creature caught off Keahole PointThe animal, dubbed an "octosquid," is found off the Big
It's a squid, it's an octopus, it's ... a mystery from the deep. What appears to be a half-squid, half-octopus specimen found off Keahole Point on the Big Island remains unidentified today and could possibly be a new species, said local biologists. The specimen was found caught in a filter in one of Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority's deep-sea water pipelines last week. The pipeline, which runs 3,000 feet deep, sucks up cold, deep-sea water for the tenants of the natural energy lab. "When we first saw it, I was really delighted because it was new and alive," said Jan War, operations manager at NELHA. "I've never seen anything like that." The natural energy lab is a state agency that operates Hawaii Ocean Science and Technology Park in Kailua-Kona, adjacent to one of the steepest offshore slopes in the Hawaiian Islands. According to Richard Young, an oceanography professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the specimen tentatively belongs to the genus Mastigoteuthis, but the species is undetermined. War, who termed the specimen "octosquid" for the way it looked, said it was about a foot long, with white suction cups, eight tentacles and an octopus head with a squidlike mantle. The octosquid was pulled to the surface, along with three rattail fish and half a dozen satellite jellyfish, and stayed alive for three days. According to War, the lab usually checks its filters once a month, but this time, it put a plankton net in one of the filters and checked it two weeks later. The pitch-black conditions at 3,000 feet below sea level are unfamiliar to most but riveting to scientists who have had the opportunity to submerge. The sea floor is full of loose sediment, big boulders and rocks, and a lot of mucuslike things floating in the water, which are usually specimens that died at the surface and drifted to the bottom. "It's quite fascinating," War said. "When you get below 700 feet, it's a totally different world. Lots of fish have heads like a fish and a body like an eel. There are fish floating in a vertical position, with the head up, and don't move unless they're disturbed." Christopher Kelley, program biologist for the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory, went to the natural energy lab Tuesday to pick up the preserved octosquid, rattail fish and jellyfish, which had been stored in a freezer, and brought them back to UH-Manoa's oceanography department. "It's a beautiful squid. It's a gorgeous ruby red color," Kelley said. "We really enjoy these little mysteries that come up." Also during Kelley's visit to NELHA yesterday, he and War talked about a more formal sampling program to search for other deep-sea critters. War said their goal is to sample the intake screen more often and capture animals alive and study them in captivity. "This opens up a whole new area of research that UH can be involved with," War said. In October, NELHA will be checking its deep-sea pipelines, something that usually happens every eight to 10 years, because it is worried that something might have happened to them during the earthquakes in October. "If it's a new species, (NELHA) would like to name it," War said. "But that is sort of the honor of whoever classifies it."
A while ago, I was thinking of why this sword was so famous. In fact, Many people talk about the popular story of the sword on the stone. Years ago I had read the story of it, but I had never realized the sword mention in the story was non other then the sword Excalibur. So I’ve decided to check it out the legend behind.
Here is some info of the legend of the story
Sword in the Stone (the proof of Arthur’s lineage) In surviving accounts of Arthur, there are two originally separate legends about the sword’s origin. The first is the “Sword in the Stone” legend, originally appearing in Robert de Boron’s poem Merlin, in which Excalibur can only be drawn from the stone by Arthur, the rightful king. The second comes from the later Post-Vulgate Suite du Merlin, which was taken up by Sir Thomas Malory. Here, Arthur receives Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake after breaking his first sword in a fight with King Pellinore. The Lady of the Lake calls the sword “Excalibur, that is as to say as Cut-steel,” and Arthur takes it from a hand rising out of the lake.
As Arthur lies dying, he tells Sir Bedivere (Sir Griflet in some versions) to return his sword to the lake by throwing it into the water. Bedivere is reluctant to throw away such a precious sword, so twice he only pretends to do so. Each time, Arthur asks him to describe what he saw. When Bedivere tells him the sword simply fell into the water, Arthur scolds him harshly. Finally, Bedivere throws Excalibur into the lake. Before the sword strikes the water’s surface, a hand reaches up to grasp it and pulls it under.
Arthur leaves on a death barge with the three queens to Avalon, where as his legend says, he will one day return to rule in Britain’s darkest hour.
Malory records both versions of the legend in his Le Morte d’Arthur, and confusingly calls both swords Excalibur.
The film Excalibur attempts to rectify this by having only one sword, which Arthur inherits through his father and later breaks; the Lady of the Lake then repairs it.
Other information
The story of the Sword in the Stone has an analogue in some versions of the story of Sigurd (the Norse proto-Siegfried), who draws his father Sigmund’s sword out of a tree where it is embedded.
In several early French works such as Chrétien de Troyes’ Perceval, the Story of the Grail and the Vulgate Lancelot Proper section, Excalibur is used by Gawain, Arthur’s nephew and one of his best knights. This is in contrast to later versions, where Excalibur belongs solely to the king. In the Alliterative Morte Arthure, Arthur is said to have two legendary swords, the second one being Clarent, stolen by the evil Mordred. Arthur receives his fatal blow from Clarent.

Lifeboat pictures *solve Sydney mystery* Email Printer friendly version Normal font Large font Without doubt the most chilling find in the debris field was the presence of five of Sydney’s life boats.Photo: The Finding Sydney FoundationDylan WelchApril 7, 2008 - 11:26AM
A new photo of the wreck of HMAS Sydney might have solved the mystery of whether some of the crew attempted a last-ditch escape as the ship sank. The entire crew were thought to have gone down with the ship in November 1941 after a battle with the German raider Kormoran.
But initial photos showed all of the ship's lifeboats were missing from their cradles, raising questions as to whether crew tried to flee in the boats as the ship sank. But a photo released today seems to answer that question, with five lifeboats found resting on the ocean near the wreck of the Sydney.
"That means that people didn't get away," Tom Frame, the author of HMAS Sydney: Loss And Controversy, said.
Last week Professor Frame said questions remained about the lifeboats. "There is still a real element of mystery as to why the amount of damage we are seeing in these pictures prevented the crew from getting off," he said on Friday.
"It doesn't seem from what we have seen that the ship sank suddenly. It doesn't have the cataclysmic damage to explain why no one got away."
The account of the tragedy given by German sailors aboard the Kormoran states the boat stayed afloat for at east six hours before sinking.
That would have been long enough for the crew to attempt an escape mission, Professor Frame said.
But today's photo appears to have dispelled that notion and, when informed of the discovery, Professor Frame said it left few questions.
"The previous assumption was that if the lifeboats weren't in the area then some people may have gotten away. But if [the lifeboats are] in the area then they sank and came loose and went down separately."
The only question remaining now was whether the lifeboats themselves had suffered any damage, and whether that had rendered them useless.
"They may have tried to deploy them and they didn t work," he said.

At last, I have got around to talking about my Similan and Surin islands dive trip in Oct. I did a four day liveaboard from Kho Lak, thats an hour or two north of Phuket. I went with Sea Dragon and as this is the second trip with them in two years, you can see I like them. They have been there a while, run a good operation at a good price. (Have a look at the Phuket based outfits). After an evening boarding and departure on their Andaman boat we had a dive before breakfast on the Similan 5, the first dive for 6 months for me. I really enjoy these dives, it gives you such a good appetite! It was a relaxing dive and went well, I was not the lowest on air, always a concern of mine, on my last trip as a 50+ guy diving with 3 young ladies I just could not win! There was an extensive eel garden and over breakfast we all said the same thing, 'what a life, do they ever come right out of their holes, or is that it?' Anyone know? We had some beach visits, the first day I swam over to a very new resort, set discretely among the trees. This was new, very low key and well done. I needed a hat having lost my last and it was amusing flattening out and drying the notes, no one minded. Dont seem to matter how many bags you put your money in, it gets wet. Second dive we see a Manta! Deep and feeding, I saw it materialise from the distance and swim towards us. With its huge slow wing beats it was awesome, quite too your breath away! It moved out a little as flew past us. And we were the only group to see it!!! Envy!!! However later on everyone got an very good look when we were circled by two curious mantas on two dives at Kho Bon, so there were no disappointed people. We moved up the Similans, diving Elephant Rock, less current than last time. This is a pile of house size boulders that you can swim around and under. On one dive we met a group of oriental divers who were swarming over a big coral outcrop and all digging and probing with stainless steel spikes. The was a lot of mud and debris about them in the water. Several were visibly hanging on to live coral! Anything hiding was going to be killed by the spikes, it was all rather horrifying to us. We tried to move across to the nearest of the group but he sensed our intentions and moved away. Who were they? Who can say, but they were bad news. Next , going north, was Kho Bon, a limestone island on its own and there we saw the curious mantas. Snorkelling around the southern end of the island is one of the highlights of my last trip and it did not disappoint this time. It is deep quickly, very clear, you swim in surf close to the rocks. Around the western side there are several deep clefts I can just about get down into, very exhilarating. On was full of big blue parrot fish. Went ashore and saw the turtle breeding pens on the Park HQ on the Surin. Strange little things, hold your had still long enough in the tank and they will try to eat it! Last day and two dives on Richelieu Rock. No big stuff but lots to see and many interesting things, octopus, one swimming, a big cuttlefish, silver trevellys, it is a brilliant place. Unfortunately we mislaid the sun on the last two days, the monsoon was playing silly buggers and had finished a month early and then tried to come back, but it was no real problem for us. It all went well, diving in small groups means not much of a crowd, four to one DM, the food was excellent though you had to like Thai cuisine to get the best from the trip. This is tasty and warm, but not too hot, you can add all the heat you want with chilli and fish sauce. One thing puzzled me, the boat was the same on top but things on the dive deck were different from what I remembered. Must be getting old I thought and kept quiet. Then I learned that the boat, the Andaman, had a new hull with a bigger dive deck! I felt better then. Kho Lak had changed in two years, more tourist shops and street lighting now. Last time I had some nervous walks back along the road with my dive light on the back of my legs which I hoped the manic drivers could see, the road being straight and fast. Also, mobiles worked everywhere, last time I was there it was on the beach only or one place in the middle of the road, opposite Sea Dragon, dangerous. Both the bars are much the same, Tarzan's or Funky Geko, not that you can tell them apart after a while! -- _J_O_H_N____R_E_L_P_H____________ Teddington, Middlesex in Cold Old England.
Cleopatra and the Pearl Earring - By: Patrick Cavanaugh
Here is the story: The love between Antony and Cleopatra is a legend. But, that’s only half the story…their love was quite competitive. Both trying to outdo one another. And that’s just the beginning…this 2,000 year old tale tells of her other love – pearls.According to legend, Antony was smitten by Cleopatra, maybe overwhelmed, maybe possessed. Anyhow, Cleopatra was the one in control of the situation. Antony would do anything to win Cleopatra. Celebrations, extravagant feasts, banquets would he provide during this courtship. Never letting on that any of these celebrations impressed her. More details in a moment. But first, remember that she had a relationship with Julius Caesar. She had a son, who she claimed came from their union. Julius Caesar refused to make him his heir. Cleopatra lived in Rome until Caesar’s assassination. She then went back to Egypt and promptly had her brother poisoned. He was in her way. After Caesar’s death Antony ruled one half of Rome. It seems Cleopatra had coveted the Empire since her days with Caesar. She might have been more in love with Rome than with Marc Antony. In any case, the seductress that she was, loved to ridicule him. She always had the upper hand. Cleopatra would never let on that Antony impressed her. She ridiculed him and made fun of his efforts to win her favor. One day Cleopatra declared that she could out do Antony. Cleopatra wagered that she would spend 10 times more on her feast, than he ever did. Antony rose to the challenge. He countered her bet. He wagered that she would not be able to win. Providing Antony with a feast fit for a king, she appeared before him wearing with a fantastic pair of pearl earrings. These pearl earrings were described by Pliny to be "two most precious pearls, the singular and only such jewels in the world, and even Nature's wonder." Antony was not impressed with this feast, knowing that he had provided many celebrations far in excess of this one. Asking her how much she spent, Cleopatra exclaimed that she had spent over ten millionsesterci (an amount equal to a kings ransome) To prove herself the winner, Cleopatra removed a pearl from her ear, dissolved it in a chalice of vinegar and toasting his good health, drank it down. A kingly fortune in a single swallow. She began to remove the other pearl; but, the judge of the contest would not allow it. He declared Antony the loser. Pliny mentions that the remaining pearl was cut in half and made into earrings for the statue of Venus, goddess of Love, in the Pantheon Temple of the gods, in Rome. Immortalizing the bet.
